The next painting I’d like to share with you is “Yixing Teapot, Silver, and Bowl”

Like the previous painting, this continues to explore a calm world. Rather than focusing on that moment right before tea, this painting evokes a quiet mood through the use of soft, subdued light.

I draw a lot of inspiration from the artistic ideals of Japan – and I love the beauty that has evolved around the Tea Ceremony.

A favorite book of mine explores that topic, and one quote I particularly love expresses the union between a work of art and the viewer – in that moment of appreciation, they are not different:

“Our mind is the canvas on which the artists lay their color; their pigments are our emotions; their light the light of joy, the shadow of sadness. The painting is of ourselves, as we are of the painting.”
― Kakuzō Okakura, The Book of Tea

About the title of this painting: Yixing is a city in China which has produced characteristic pottery – in particular tea ware – for over 800 years.

The pottery is often left unglazed, and through years of use it absorbs much of the color and character of the tea it contains.

This particular teapot – echoing the shapes and forms of bamboo – is a personal favorite.

“Yixing Teapot, Silver, and Bowl” is done with oil on linen on panel, measures 11×14 inches, and is presented in a beautiful silver-leaf traditional frame.  This painting is available.

Next, I’d like to continue with a simpler painting that goes even further into the stillness of the present moment.
