“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”
— Albert Einstein
“Persimmon and Chestnuts” is an original oil painting on panel, capturing the quiet mystery within everyday objects. A luminous persimmon and a cluster of richly textured chestnuts rest upon a brocaded cloth, their forms bathed in soft, shifting light.
Each element is rendered with meticulous attention—from the smooth, radiant surface of the persimmon to the rugged, organic textures of the chestnuts. The intricate patterns of the fabric add another layer of depth, hinting at something just beyond the visible. The play of light and shadow transforms these familiar objects into something enigmatic, drawing the viewer into a world where the ordinary holds a quiet sense of wonder.
Measuring 5 x 5 inches (13 x 13 cm), the painting is framed in a floating frame, creating subtle separation that enhances its depth and presence. This framing style amplifies the richness of the colors and textures, allowing the piece to unfold like a small, intimate mystery. The framed dimensions are 8 x 8 inches (20 x 20 cm), offering a contemporary, refined presentation that complements the painting’s exploration of hidden beauty and quiet intrigue.

"Persimmon and Chestnuts"
An Original Still Life Painting
The Inspiration
“Persimmon and Chestnuts” is an invitation to step into the quiet mystery of the everyday—a meditation on light, texture, and the hidden depth within simple objects. Inspired by the interplay of the known and the enigmatic, this painting transforms a luminous persimmon and a cluster of chestnuts into a moment of contemplation, where stillness reveals unexpected beauty.
At the center of the composition, the persimmon glows with a soft radiance, its surface smooth and polished, catching the light with an almost ethereal warmth. In contrast, the chestnuts beside it are rough and tactile, their irregular shapes grounding the scene in natural complexity. Beneath them, the brocaded cloth introduces yet another layer of intrigue, its intricate patterns half-revealed in shifting shadow, hinting at something just beyond reach.
This painting is an exploration of perception—how light can elevate the ordinary, revealing textures and depths that might otherwise go unnoticed. The way illumination carves across the scene, emphasizing certain details while leaving others in shadow, mirrors the way mystery is woven into daily life. Do we see only the surface, or can we sense the quiet story unfolding beneath?
The scene is bathed in a soft, contemplative glow, evoking the hush of a dimly lit room, the fleeting shimmer of afternoon light through a window, or the moment of pause before dusk settles. It invites the viewer to linger, to observe closely, and to appreciate the quiet revelations that emerge in stillness.
“Persimmon and Chestnuts” is a reflection on the beauty of mystery—on how the simplest forms can hold profound depth when seen through the right lens. It reminds us that wonder is often found in the smallest details, waiting to be noticed.
The Finest Materials
“Persimmon and Chestnuts” has been meticulously crafted using the finest materials, employing traditional techniques that have been refined and passed down through generations of artists for over five centuries.
This painting is executed on prepared panel, a surface chosen for its exceptional stability, smoothness, and ability to hold paint with remarkable clarity. The panel is carefully primed to create a stable, archival foundation—ensuring that the painting remains vibrant and enduring for years to come. This preparation process allows for precise detailing and enhances the interplay of light and shadow within the composition.
Only the finest oil paints have been selected, chosen for their richness, depth, and permanence. Many of the pigments used in this piece have been sourced from traditional locations around the world, known for their historical significance and lasting brilliance. The deep orange glow of the persimmon is achieved through a blend of red oxide from Italy and yellow ochre from Cyprus, creating a natural warmth and richness. The deep, earthy tones of the chestnuts incorporate burnt sienna from Tuscany, lending them depth and texture. The surrounding shadows and fabric folds are carefully built with layers of ivory black from charred bone and green earth from ancient Venetian quarries—pigments that have been used by master painters for centuries. Each color is chosen not only for its visual impact but also for its stability over time.
Every element of this painting, from the luminous sheen of the persimmon to the subtle textures of the chestnuts, has been created with a commitment to lasting beauty. Designed to stand the test of time, “Persimmon and Chestnuts” is a piece that will continue to captivate and inspire, offering a quiet moment of contemplation for generations to come.
Painstaking Process
“Persimmon and Chestnuts” was created using a traditional process very little changed for 500 years, known as the Flemish Technique. The arrangement of objects was carefully composed in a controlled lighting environment, allowing for a precise balance of light and shadow to enhance the richness of form and texture.
Several small “thumbnail” sketches were made in pencil first, determining the overall design and placement of objects. A “color study” followed—this small version of the painting, completed without much detail, allowed for a deeper understanding of the primary colors and overall harmony of the composition. This study also served as a rehearsal, ensuring that the final painting would capture the intended balance of warmth and depth.
Once the preparatory studies were complete, the composition was drawn onto the panel using light charcoal. The main shapes and placements were carefully mapped out, with an emphasis on proportion and structure, while finer details were left to develop in later stages.
A simplified version of the painting in black and white was then applied on top of the charcoal sketch. This is known as an “underpainting,” a technique that establishes major forms and refines the gradations of light and dark—what artists refer to as “value.” By working out these elements independently of color, the painting developed a strong foundation, ensuring depth and luminosity in the final layers.
After several days, once the underpainting was sufficiently dry, the color layer was applied—this is what you see in the finished painting. The color was carefully built up in transparent layers, a process known as “glazing.” These thin washes create a jewel-like depth and glowing transparency of color, which enhances the rich warmth of the persimmon, the earthy tones of the chestnuts, and the delicate highlights reflecting off the brocaded cloth.
Through this time-honored process, “Persimmon and Chestnuts” achieves a quiet yet striking presence, transforming everyday objects into a luminous meditation on light, texture, and stillness.

Ready for your collection today
“Persimmon and Chestnuts” measures 5 × 5 inches (13 × 13 cm) and is painted with oil on prepared panel, following time-tested traditional methods.
It is set in a flat black floating frame, with outer dimensions of 8 × 8 inches (20 × 20 cm), and is ready to hang on your wall.
A floating frame enhances artwork by creating the illusion that the painting is suspended within the frame, with a small gap between the panel and the inner edges. This design allows the full surface of the painting to remain visible while adding depth and dimension.
One of the key advantages of a floating frame is its clean, contemporary aesthetic that complements both modern and traditional interiors. The subtle separation between the artwork and the frame emphasizes the composition without overpowering it, while natural shadows within the gap enhance the sense of depth.
Beyond aesthetics, floating frames provide structural protection by securing the painting’s edges and reducing wear over time. They also allow for slight air circulation, helping to preserve the artwork’s longevity. Offering both elegance and functionality, floating frames are an excellent choice for displaying artwork with a refined, polished look.

About These Paintings
These paintings grow out of two sources: On the one hand, a deep love for the great still life tradition of the Dutch Golden Age, and on the other, a life-long interest in meditation.
For both viewer and artist, still life is the perfect opportunity to have that experience which all meditation seems to aim at: complete and total absorption in the present moment. Not the past. Not the future. Just what is in front of you. Right here. Right now.
That moment of quiet, intense connection – that sense of one-ness – is all the inspiration I need… and these paintings emerge from that source.
As such, this isn’t really a personal art. It’s not about me or my views or my ideas.
My role is to step aside, and let these silent moments speak through me.
And there isn’t anything more personal.
